About this Course

This course aims to encourage students to get familiar with feminist theories through reading and analyzing the political, cultural, and personal experiences that characters encounter in the four selected Burmese literary pieces. With supplemental theory-reading along with lived experiences told through the four pieces, the instructors will help students connect the ground-work with theories, see the structural oppressions that people, particularly women in Burma from 1950s - 2000s, encounter -- colonialism; capitalism; neo-liberal globalization, and the formation of police-military institutions, all of which coexist and dominate our society together with heteropatriarchy.
